Who Needs An Engine To Fly?

Written by Felipe Santiago | Aug 07, 2018

I have always been captivated by the idea of soaring through the skies, unencumbered by the noise and constraints of an engine. Today, my dream was about to take flight as I prepared to pilot a Blanik Glider, an older but still sleek enough aircraft renowned for its graceful performance and reliability. As I approached the airfield, the morning sun cast a golden hue over the landscape, and a gentle breeze whispered promises of adventure. My heart raced with a mix of excitement and nerves, a testament to the anticipation that had been building for weeks. The Blanik Glider, with its slender wings and streamlined fuselage, stood ready on the tarmac, a testament to the marvels of aerodynamics and human ingenuity. After a thorough pre-flight check, I donned my flight suit and helmet, feeling the reassuring weight of the gear that would accompany me on this journey. As I settled into the cockpit, the world outside seemed to fade away, leaving only the promise of the open sky. With a nod to the ground crew, the tow plane began its ascent, pulling the glider into the air with a gentle tug. I felt the thrill of the lift as the ground fell away beneath me, and soon, the tow rope was released, leaving me to navigate the currents of the wind. The silence was profound, broken only by the soft rush of air over the wings. I marveled at the panoramic views unfolding before me, the earth a patchwork quilt of fields and forests, rivers and roads. In that moment, I understood the allure of gliding, the pure joy of flight that transcended the ordinary, and I knew this was only the beginning of my journey into the skies.

Update: I can now gladly say I hold a Commercial Glider Pilot Certificate!
