How to get an FCC Radio Operator Permit
Here at Aviator Zone Academy, we are constantly asked, “when is an FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit (RROP) required?” which is usually followed by “where can I get a Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit?”—let’s dig in and find out!
“What is the FCC Radio Operator Permit, and why do I need it?”
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) created this license to make some extra cash. That’s the way I see it. There is no required course or additional training received before getting the permit. It is simply a requirement to operate an aircraft internationally. The good thing about this permit is that you only pay the fee once and it never expires. If you are flying within the continental US you will not need this, your pilot certificate will suffice.
“How much does it cost?”
There is a one-time fee of $35 dollars, it was recently lowered if you could believe that. This permit never expires.
“How Do I apply FOR THE PERMIT?”
To obtain the permit follow the steps below:
Click on Register to obtain a FCC Registration Number (FRN)
Follow the instructions to complete the registration.
Log in with your FRN and password.
On the left side click on >Apply for a New License (top left)
Select RR - Restricted Operator from the list.
Continue following the instructions.
Once paid you will receive a link in your email to view the actual permit. This could take some time. If you read the comments you will see it takes about 24 hrs.
“If I lose the license, how can I retrieve it?”
In this case, you can request a replacement online and you can reprint your certificate. There is no additional cost to this step.
