UPDATED TSA Fight Training Security Program

Effective July 30, 2024 a new rules will apply to students and flight training providers.

Below we will give you the most important take away of the new rules and what they mean to our students.

Time Based vs Activity Based

Currently, an STA is required for each training event. Consistent with recommendations and new vetting capabilities, under § 1552.31(d) of the final rule, an STA is now valid for up to 5 years. This mean that no longer will you need to submit an application if you finish Private Pilot Certification and want to pursue a Multi Engine Rating. As long as the training is conducted within 5 years, then there is no additional application or fees needed.

New Fee Structure

Under the new rule the cost of an application is $140. This is actually a great thing. Like we mentioned above the $10 increase is totally worth it because of how much longer your application is valid for.

There is a reduced fee of $125 if you had other Security Treat Assesments (SATs). While we couldn’t find specifically what would count, we assume it would be like TSA Precheck or Global Entry Programs. We hope to see more clarity on this soon.

Training Activities Not Requiring Notification

Below provides a current list of flight training activities that do not require notification. This list replaces all information previously issued by TSA regarding training activities that do not require notification.
